The Big To-Do: Get Unzipped at Chateau Polonez, Friday, Aug. 17

Who says bridal shows have to be…demure? Not Chateau Polonez, that’s for sure! This Friday’s “Unzipped” cocktail party and fashion show invites brides and their besties (grooms, too, if they promise to behave), to sip, nibble and enjoy, as hip wedding wear shares the stage with hot cocktail frocks, lingerie and swimwear. Plenty of vendors on hand, too. Oh, and did we mention the pole dancing demo? Yes, it’s that kind of party. Admission is 21 and older. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Go!

Retro, Soul-Filled Wedding by C. Baron Photography

They’re both vegetarians. Their favorite season is fall. They both love cooking and vintage soul records and, more than anything, one another. When Camille and Nathan decided to make it official, the pair knew they wanted to their wedding to be an unforgettable reflection of their likes, and their love. Camille spent hours scouring consignment and thrift shops, “scooping up as many pretty amber vessels and goblets as I could find,” she tells us. Reprints of the pairs’ parents’ and grandparents’ weddings mixed with potted succulents and glowing candles in a tableau the two created by hand. On the moonlit eve of their magnificent event, the historic Gardens of Bammel Lane was filled with autumnal shades of marigold, amber, orange and green—not to mention plenty of dancing to—what else?—sweet soul music from days gone by. We’re delighted to share C. Baron Photography’s very pretty pictures of this unique, DIY-filled wedding. And even more delighted to wish Camille and Nathan a lifetime of happiness, music and love. Cheers!

Americana Engagement Shoot by Archetype Studio

One of the things we love about Archetype Studio is how the photo-and-creative-direction team of Koby and Terilyn Brown translates a couple’s vision through spot-on styling. David and Michelle’s engagement shoot is no exception. Though the to-be-weds may have met under party-hearty circumstances (in Vegas, where Michelle was celebrating her 21st birthday), their engagement session is the very picture of timeless Americana and pastoral elegance. Shot at a roadside park along Eldridge Parkway in North Houston, these images feel at once intimate and expansive, sexy and serene, patriotic and deeply personal. Notes Terilyn: “The canoe was such a fun element to work with, and the team at Recollection Vintage Rentals did a beautiful job pulling the props needed to help our vision come to life.” Gorgeous couple, gorgeous shoot. Congratulations, Michelle and David, who made it official July 28 at Woodlands Resort & Conference Center!

Classic Courtyard on St. James Wedding by Civic Photos

You see the unabashed tenderness in groom Brandon’s embrace of his lovely bride? You see the way he just holds on to her as if she were the most precious thing in the world? That’s because she is. And he nearly lost her, and the person responsible for bringing her into this world. The day before the couple’s July wedding, Stephanie and her mother were in a very serious car accident, one that injured Stephanie and sent her mother to the hospital by emergency transport. “I did not go to sleep until 4 a.m.,” Stephanie tells us. “All I could think about was the accident, and not the wedding. It wasn’t until I woke up that I realized, ‘Oh my gosh, today is my wedding day!’” And despite her and her mother’s physical pain, that wedding “was everything that I ever wanted,” she says. Captured in Civic Photos’ uniquely evocative, vintage-style images are all the rich, joyful colors, the magnificent Edible Designs by Jessie cake, the lovely Courtyard on St. James grounds and ballroom, the affection of friends and family, and most of all the love of Stephanie’s adoring groom, whom she met senior year in high school, and has been devoted to ever since. We’re grateful to Civic Photos’ Barrett Delyon Henry for sharing with us his iconic images. And we are so very thankful to Stephanie and Brandon for sharing their wedding with us, and reminding us all of the true meaning of that most meaningful day. Wishing you both all the happiness in the world!

Engagement Ring Shopping Tips, With Hearts on Fire’s Ilaria Lanzoni

How to Pick the Perfect Engagement Ring, With Hearts on Fire’s Ilaria Lanzoni

Sure, some guys still do the whole ring thing solo, unbeknownst to their one-and-only. But in these modern times, most women have at least some involvement in the selection of the ring that likely will become the most important piece of jewelry they’ll ever wear. If you want to participate, at least in part, in choosing that perfect piece of precious metal and stone, then this guest post from Hearts on Fire director of design Ilaria Lanzoni is one you do not want to miss.

You’ve met the man of your dreams, you know he’s the one, and now you’re talking marriage—which will inevitably lead to discussions about engagement rings. You know you want a ring that you’re going to love forever, but how do you know which ring will fulfill that requirement?

The abundance of options available can be overwhelming. You have to consider the setting and style of the ring (do you want solitaire, multi-stone, halo, pavé, or split shank?) and also the cut of the center diamond (do you want round, square, oval, or one of the many other options?).

Think about your personal style. Do you prefer more classic designs, and clean, timeless looks? Or are you a trend-watcher who might wish for a ring with a more modern vibe?

Next, you need to consider the size and shape of the ring. Do you want something flashy and bold that really stands out, or would a simple, low-profile ring be better for you?

Once you’ve settled on some of these preliminaries, it’s time to grab a girlfriend, sister or even your groom-to-be and try a few styles on. Because, honestly, what’s more fun than engagement-ring shopping?

While you’re enjoying all your ring shopping, keep a few things in mind. If you and your soon-to-be fiancé have discussed a budget, be sure to respect that. This will prevent the tragedy of falling in love with a ring that puts you both in a tough situation.

If you haven’t discussed a budget yet, stay focused on finding the style of engagement ring you like the best, rather than attempting to choose one specific ring. This is where having a trusted friend or family member with you while shopping comes in handy, as men will often ask someone in their girlfriend’s inner circle for help selecting the perfect engagement ring. If he does, it helps to be sure that the person your man asks knows what you like.

If you’re really unsure, you can always work directly with someone in a jewelry store, who can show you ring options and help you determine which style you like the best. This can actually be done in person or online. For example, at Hearts on Fire you can “drop a hint” once you’ve found the ring you love, and your man will receive an email about the ring you’ve chosen.

On the same site, you can also work with a diamond Perfection Stylist to learn more about the options available and to get personal help choosing the perfect ring for you.

If you’re working with a jeweler, be sure to either have that person keep notes on your preferences, or take notes yourself. In the end, of course, the perfect ring is any ring you receive from the man you love!

City Pretty Houston Metro Bridal Shoot by Sarah Ainsworth Photography

While lots of Houston couples choose gritty city locations for their e-sessions, the urban bridal shoot is a rare bird. A shoot like Bim’s bridals, by HWB fave Sarah Ainsworth makes us wish it weren’t so. The parks, street corners and buildings that serve as backdrops for Bim’s photos just enhance the bride’s incredible loveliness, and the grandeur and femininity of her stunning Lazaro gown and magnificent bouquet. A little background on our gorgeous bride, courtesy of Ainsworth: “Bim and John met while working at the same company in San Francisco. They currently live and work in Australia. Bim is quiet and absolutely the sweetest person you will ever meet. John is so caring of everyone and adores his bride.” The couple has already tied the knot at Houston’s Petroleum Club, but will celebrate a second wedding in Sri Lanka to include Bim’s entire family. We’re so grateful to Bim for sharing her beautiful images with our brides. Congratulations, and much happiness to you and John!
