Lovely Butler’s Courtyard Wedding with Overseas Proposal Story

“Kevin asked me to marry him in Norway, where I was born,” Houston bride Kristine tells us. “He was visiting me while I was doing an internship abroad. He already had a ring, had already asked my dad for my hand in marriage, and was just waiting for the right time to ask. The last day, which we spent at my family cottage, was the most gorgeous day. The sun was shining and the temperature was perfect. We went for a long walk to a lighthouse located on the shore of the North Sea. As soon as we arrived, Kevin couldn’t wait, and got down on one knee.” Wondering what Kristine’s answer was? Yeah, you guessed it. The pair made it official this summer, in front of 125 beloved friends and family members, with a beautiful ceremony and fun, rustic-elegant reception at Butler’s Courtyard. “I wanted my wedding to be very laid-back and relaxed, which I achieved with having it mostly outdoors. The interior features of the venue were very rustic, with exposed brick, wooden beams, chandeliers and vintage candelabras, which achieved the look I wanted on their own. Outdoors we had light linens, mercury-glass vases, blush bridesmaid dresses, baby’s breath, string-bulb lights and an amazing piano man who played and sang all the classics…which made my wedding a dream come true!” Thank you so much, Kristine and Kevin, for sharing your dream day with all of us. Thanks, too, to Mustard Seed Photography, for some very lovely documentation of this beautiful Houston wedding.

Guest Post: Kat Creech of Kat Creech Events Shares Her Best Wedding Guestbook Ideas

We’re delighted to welcome event planner extraordinaire Kat Creech of Kat Creech Events (you may remember her from THIS gorgeous wedding or THIS one) to the Houston Wedding Blog today, to share her tips on creating a unique, original and beautiful wedding guestbook that guests will have fun signing into at the wedding—and that you will cherish for a lifetime.

From Kat Creech:

The memories you make on your wedding day should last a lifetime. So, when we talk about ideas for wedding guestbooks with our clients, we talk about personalization and something practical that isn’t just a document of who attended your wedding—but a keepsake that can be returned to over and over again, and enjoyed over the years.

Here are some of our best tips:

A thumbprint guestbook is an art piece that allows guests to use a stamp pad and leave their thumbprint with a message. Most commonly used are trees, upon which guests press their thumbprints as “leaves.” If you have talent in the family, use it, and take the idea of a thumbprint tree to truly create a masterpiece to enjoy in your home. One client’s mom, a rockstar artist, painted the landscape of a tree, while the bride cut paper leaves and lemons for guests to sign, creating a canvas wedding guestbook. The end result was pretty epic. But trees aren’t the only option. Peacock feathers, balloons—they sky is the limit. You should pick a format that blends with your personal style, not just the wedding style, as you want it to remain timeless. Think of your hobbies and life passions, and create some magic.

How about having guests write a personal note on a card and placing it in an envelope as part of your wedding guestbook? Using a blend of your wedding colors and an oh-so fabulous wedding smash book, we have created a guestbook design with a little effort and a lot of personalization, not to mention a lifetime of memories. This kind of guestbook invites private, intimate messages from friends and family, and allows you to look back on you wedding day and those who celebrated with you. Awww…

Planning to have a photo booth at your wedding? Not only will it provide a way for guests to cool down from all the dancing, and let their hair down after all the formalities, but photo booth photos really capture the exuberance of the wedding moment. Since most photo booths print two copies of each photo, your guests can keep one as a keepsake, and place the other in a photo guestbook, which you can customize to fit your wedding theme—thank you, Etsy!

For those of you who want to really make a statement, awesome oversize whimsical white initial letters might be the thing for you. They can be decorated with loving messages from family and friends in bright colors, and become a personal touch to your wedding. Add some oversize paper flowers and your guestbook becomes an art piece in your new home. Good stuff!

Got a grandma, aunt or family member who loves to quilt? Embrace the idea of having your guests sign quilt squares as your wedding guestbook. Provide fabric squares for guests to leave a little love message on. These can then be made into a guestbook quilt you can snuggle under while watching movies…perhaps even the film of your unforgettable wedding! Truth be told, I want a wedding redo so I can steal this idea.

Congratulations, and happy planning, brides!!

White, Cream and Blush Houston Country Club Wedding

Back in 2011, a casual father-daughter lunch—a tradition Emily Catherine has enjoyed with her dad since she was very young—turned out to be a very important occasion, when a “tall handsome guy stopped me out of nowhere and said, ‘Hi, I’m Ben Riggs. Weren’t you in my brother’s grade at Kinkaid?’” recounts the bride. “We chatted for a little bit and then he went back to his friends and I went back to my dad. As I walked away, I had butterflies in my stomach. I had never met a guy who was so outgoing, confident and charismatic. I knew there was just something special about him.” The two became Facebook friends, started messaging each other, eventually shared phone numbers, and, as Emily Catherine says, “The rest is history!” This summer, the pair shared vows in a traditional church ceremony, followed by a Houston Country Club bash attended by 500 of their nearest and dearest. Southern elegance ruled the day, in the form of oodles of white, cream and blush roses, along with Southern specialties including fried oysters and grits, and a six-foot-tall, monogrammed, flower-wrapped cake. “We wanted people from all generations on the dance floor all night long,” says Emily Catherine of the high-energy dancing to the live band. “One of my favorite moments of our wedding was when they opened the doors to the church before my dad and I walked down the aisle. Ben and I had not seen each other before the wedding, and I couldn’t get to the end fast enough to be with him! Plus, I could see he was trying to hold back from getting choked up, it was so sweet! My other favorite moment was during our first dance. I looked around the room and saw all of our friends and family. I mean, when in your life do you have all the people who are important to you all together?” At your once-in-a-lifetime wedding, that’s when. Congratulations, Emily Catherine and Ben, and big thanks to Michael Carr Photography for the beautiful photos of this beautiful Houston wedding.

“We are both Aggies. Whoop!” says nursing student Heather of her spring Woodlands Country Club wedding to groom Andrew. “We had hung out with each all of our last semester at A&M and he, of course, waited until the last day before we graduated to take me for my favorite: ice cream! We talked for three hours and I knew right then and there we were going to be something very special. My best friend Mandy will take the credit for introducing us.” Photo studio Half Orange Photography, meanwhile, gets the credit for the sweet photos of this relaxed and effortlessly elegant Woodlands wedding. White, Silver and Purple Wedding at Hotel ZaZa

“From the beginning, I knew I wanted our wedding to truly reflect Ryan and I as a couple,” says Houston bride Lindsy. “As high-school sweethearts, we had been together for eight years when we began planning our wedding, and we had truly grown up together and with each other’s families. We wanted our wedding to be a night to celebrate our love as well as our family and friends who have supported us for so many years. I envisioned an all-white wedding with a mix of soft textured elements and strong architectural design. The ceremony, like my dress,”—a gorgeous Monique Lhuillier creation from Joan Pillow Bridal Salon, btw— “had an ethereal quality, with floating orchid petals and candles. The reception had a lot of clean lines with structured arrangements of white flowers. Fun-fact napkins, signature drinks and advice cards personalized our event and made our guests a part of our love story. The textured linens, mirrored table tops and white linen menus added texture and interest to a monochrome palette. An all-white stage, dance floor and lounge furniture created the perfect environment to dance the night away for our friends and family. After dinner the chandeliers changed to purple lighting and the music continued until early the next morning. We ended the evening with a salty-and-sweet treat of French fries and milkshake shots for our guests before a confetti exit to our hotel suite. The most special part of our wedding was a painting of our sweet dogs (who could not be at the wedding) by my cousin Jennifer. We made sure to display it under the chuppah so they could watch over our ceremony.” And if that’s not the picture of personal, meaningful wedding perfection, we don’t know what is. Congratulations, Lindsy and Ryan, and great thanks to Morgan Lynn Photography for the lovely photos!
