WiH: Can you tell us more about SlimGenetix and the specific services you offer to help couples look and feel their best before the big day?

SlimGenetix: Looking and feeling your best before your wedding day is a dream shared by many couples. What could be more meaningful than stepping into this new chapter of life, not just looking radiant but feeling confident and healthy as well? Your wedding is a celebration of love, and it also offers a unique opportunity to prioritize your well-being.

With wedding preparations often taking up to a year, it’s the ideal timeframe to achieve your weight loss and fitness goals. At SlimGenetix, we provide a comprehensive, personalized, and genetically guided approach to weight loss, ensuring couples can reach their desired weight in time for the big day. Our approach is exceptional—clients typically achieve a 20–30% reduction in body weight, well above the industry standard of 10%.

What distinguishes SlimGenetix is our use of advanced genetic testing, which identifies 77 genes related to weight gain. By understanding your unique genetic profile, we design a customized weight loss strategy that aligns with your biology. This includes a meal plan tailored to your DNA, as well as medications selected to enhance your individual results. We begin with a full medical assessment—blood work, hormonal evaluations, and an in-depth review of your medical history and previous weight loss efforts. Every appointment features a body composition analysis to monitor lean body mass, ensuring your weight loss is healthy and balanced. Once you’ve reached your target weight, we continue to support you for six months, helping you maintain your success.

To make the process seamless, we offer virtual appointments, giving you access to expert guidance from the comfort of your home. At SlimGenetix, we are committed to helping couples feel and look their absolute best as they prepare for their most memorable day.

WiH: What inspired you to pursue a career in weight loss, wellness, and preventive medicine? How did this passion evolve into SlimGenetix?

SG: For over a decade, I practiced cardiology and internal medicine in The Woodlands, Houston, treating patients with a range of heart conditions, from hypertension to heart attacks. While medications and procedures helped manage symptoms and extend lives, I had a profound realization: many of these health issues were rooted in lifestyle choices—poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and weight gain. While genetics certainly played a role, much of what I encountered was preventable. This insight sparked an epiphany—rather than focusing on treating advanced diseases; I could address the root cause: unhealthy lifestyles and weight gain. Prevention, not just treatment, became my guiding principle.

I began incorporating weight loss strategies and nutritional education as part of routine patient care, and the results were transformative. Even modest weight loss led to significant improvements, reversing chronic conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, and fatty liver disease. This experience sparked my curiosity about why some individuals face greater challenges in managing their weight than others. Today’s advancements in genetics allow us to identify 77 genes linked to weight gain, empowering us to design personalized weight loss plans that align with each patient’s unique genetic profile.

Though my work in cardiology was fulfilling, I discovered a deeper passion for helping people reclaim their health through weight management. Shifting my career focus in my forties was a daunting decision, but my passion, determination, and the unwavering support of my husband, Tony, gave me the confidence to pursue obesity medicine.

Three years later, I am proud to lead a thriving practice that empowers patients to transform their lives. Witnessing my patients regain their health, confidence, and happiness has been the most rewarding experience of my career. Helping others take control of their weight has provided me with a renewed sense of purpose—one I am honored to share with every patient on this journey.

WiH: For couples preparing for their wedding, how does SlimGenetix tailor its wellness and weight loss plans to meet individual needs?

SG: At SlimGenetix, we work with hundreds of couples to create customized genetically guided nutrition and lifestyle plans that fit their unique schedules, mindsets, and food preferences. Whether you have a busy work or travel routine and dine out frequently or prefer cooking at home, we tailor our recommendations to suit your lifestyle. For couples who often eat out, our providers review favorite restaurant menus to preselect healthier choices, ensuring dining out can still be part of a balanced plan. For those who enjoy home-cooked meals, we design meal plans based on your unique genetics that also align with your preferences and make healthy eating enjoyable.

In addition to personalized recommendations, SlimGenetix offers continuous nutritional education, strategies for building healthy eating habits, and behavioral modification tools. We are also excited to announce the launch of our new online course, Slim for Life: Mastering Weight Loss and Nutrition. This course dives into the science and biology of weight loss, explores how your genes impact metabolism, and reveals the secrets of nutrition for better eating. It also provides practical tools for meal planning, prepping, smarter shopping, and building lasting healthy habits. It’s the perfect way to empower yourself with knowledge and make sustainable changes!

WiH: As a certified nutritional genomics specialist, how do genetics play a role in weight loss and overall wellness? Can this knowledge help couples achieve their goals more effectively?

SG: Why do some people effortlessly maintain their weight while others struggle? The answer lies within your genes. At SlimGenetix, we analyze 77 genes that influence your genetic predisposition to weight gain, affecting everything from the hormonal regulation of appetite and the brain’s response to food to vitamin absorption and specific cravings. By unlocking the insights held within your DNA, we offer a scientifically precise approach to weight management.

For some, the influence of certain genes is so powerful that without medical supervision, prescription medications, and a DNA-guided meal plan, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight can be exceptionally difficult. Understanding your genetic blueprint enables us to create personalized, evidence-based strategies tailored to your biology, setting you up for long-term success on your weight loss journey. With SlimGenetix, we offer more than a plan—we provide the key to sustainable transformation based on your genetic makeup.

WiH: How do genetics help determine the recommended diet and or weight loss prescriptions you need?

SG: Most people know that height is determined by genetics, but fewer realize that 40-70% of our weight is also influenced by our genes. By analyzing the specific genes that predispose individuals to weight gain, we can create a precise, DNA-based weight loss plan. For example, individuals with the FTO risk variant gene may experience slower metabolism, imbalances between the hunger hormone ghrelin and the satiety hormone leptin, heightened sensitivity to food stimuli, and cravings for high-fat, sugary foods. This genetic insight helps us understand the core reasons for weight gain and develop targeted genetically guided strategies that include medication, meal plans, and behavioral strategies. For example, for individuals with FTO risk variant genes, I would advise removing tempting foods from the house to avoid overstimulation of the brain’s reward center and a high-protein diet (30-35% protein) because this phenotype responds well to higher protein intake. Additionally, calorie consumption should be lower than average due to slower metabolism. Medications like tirzepatide, which regulate appetite and portion control, or medications that boost metabolism, may also be prescribed.

Our digestive systems are most efficiently adapted to the traditional diets of our ancestors. While modern life offers us access to a wide array of foods from around the globe, this variety can introduce challenges such as food allergies, chronic inflammation, and weight gain. For example, individuals from Mediterranean regions often thrive on diets rich in vegetables and seafood, while the Inuit diet is naturally high in meat and fat. By following a DNA-based meal plan, we can optimize your diet not only for effective weight loss but also for overall health, tailored to your unique genetic makeup. In addition to personalized diets, genetic testing can offer tailored exercise recommendations. For instance, some people lose more weight through cardio, while others benefit more from resistance training. Wouldn’t you want to know which approach works best for your body?

WiH: How important are preventive medicine and a healthy lifestyle in the months leading up to a wedding? What should couples prioritize to feel their best on the big day?

SG: Preventive medicine is the foundation of modern healthcare, and its impact is profound. By changing our diet and losing weight, we can improve or even completely reverse chronic conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, fatty liver, infertility, and low sex drive. Additionally, it enhances overall well-being, alleviates fatigue, irritability, and depression, and boosts self-esteem. This transformative power is my greatest motivator in the work I do.

Rather than challenging our bodies with unhealthy diets, excess weight, chronic stress, and poor sleep, we should focus on nurturing ourselves. For couples starting their life journey together, what could be more important than building a healthy foundation—embracing a nutritious diet, developing healthy habits, and adopting a balanced lifestyle? For brides, feeling fit, healthy, and radiant on their big day brings confidence, joy, and lasting happiness. After all, healthy people are happy people.

WiH: What are some common challenges couples face when trying to lose weight or improve their wellness before their wedding, and how does SlimGenetix help overcome them?

SG: One of the greatest challenges couples often face is finding time in their busy schedules to prioritize their health. Ultimately, it comes down to setting priorities. When health and weight loss become a primary focus, it naturally becomes easier to carve out time for grocery shopping, cooking, meal planning, and preparation. Though it may feel overwhelming at first, with practice and deeper understanding, these tasks will soon evolve into a harmonious and enjoyable part of daily life, contributing to both well-being and balance. During every session with couples, I guide them through this process. I also offer an online course, Slim for Life: Mastering Weight Loss and Nutrition, for those seeking a deeper understanding. Plus, I’m always available between appointments for any questions, advice, or even a healthy recipe!

Another key challenge is embracing change as a process. It doesn’t happen overnight. Transforming eating habits and behaviors takes time, and I work closely with couples to make this transition easier and more sustainable. I customize each plan to fit their unique schedules and food preferences so the change feels more natural and enjoyable.

Finally, understanding the importance of investing in health is crucial. My question is, why wait until you’re sick? Invest in your health now. Just like the stock market, the earlier you invest, the greater the returns—in this case, unimaginable benefits to your well-being.

WiH: How can couples maintain the progress they’ve made with SlimGenetix even after the wedding, ensuring long-term health and wellness?

SG: I typically divide the weight loss journey into two distinct phases: the weight loss phase and the weight maintenance phase. In the initial phase, I work closely with couples to reshape their eating habits until they become second nature—easy, convenient, and sustainable. Once the desired weight loss is achieved, we transition into the equally critical weight maintenance phase. During the first 12 months, weight regain is common due to the body’s natural biology, which perceives weight loss as a negative event and tries to revert to its original weight. Under medical supervision, I guide my clients through a gradual reduction in medication while reinforcing the healthy habits we’ve established. Successfully maintaining a healthy weight is both a science and an art, requiring ongoing support and fine-tuning.

WiH: Can you share any success stories or memorable experiences with couples who’ve transformed their health through SlimGenetix?

SG: All my patients have inspiring stories, but one couple stands out in particular. Sandra, a 36-year-old marketing specialist, came to me wanting to look her best for her wedding. She had started gaining weight in her mid-twenties, and despite trying trainers, dietitians, and supplements, she couldn’t lose more than 10 pounds, let alone maintain it. For the past five years, she’d been stuck in a cycle of dieting, losing a few pounds, then regaining the weight—a pattern that left her exhausted and discouraged, with her confidence eroded. With nine months until her wedding, Sandra set a goal to lose 50 pounds.

A genetic test revealed that Sandra had a strong genetic predisposition to weight gain due to a slower metabolism, higher levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin, and an increased response to food cues. With a genetically guided weight loss plan, medication tailored to her biology, and a DNA-based meal plan, Sandra finally started shedding pounds. While helping her establish new eating habits, I noticed her family’s influence on her diet. We discussed how it would be easier for her to make lasting changes if her family was supportive and involved.

At Sandra’s third appointment, she brought her fiancé, Michael. A 38-year-old engineer, Michael ate out about 80% of the time and had a serious sweet tooth, especially enjoying ice cream after long days at work. His BMI was 37, and he was about 55 pounds overweight. Blood tests showed early-stage diabetes and elevated cholesterol. We discussed the health benefits of weight loss and how it could reverse or prevent conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Michael was motivated and decided to join Sandra on her journey.

For the next nine months, we worked on creating sustainable eating habits that fit their schedules and lifestyles. Realizing that daily cooking wasn’t practical, we settled on a compromise: they would prepare meals over the weekends and batch-cook for the week. I helped Michael review the menus of his favorite restaurants to select healthier options in advance. Within two months, both Sandra and Michael had lost 35 pounds. Inspired by their progress, they brought in their parents, who also wanted to improve their health and support the couple’s commitment to a healthier lifestyle. Soon, I was working with the whole family, and the results were transformative.

Family support has a powerful impact on health journeys, and when everyone is committed to eating well, it becomes easier for each individual to stay on track. After nine months, Michael had lost 57 pounds, and his blood work returned to normal. Sandra lost 60 pounds and radiated happiness and confidence on her wedding day.

WiH: What roles does mindset play in achieving weight loss and wellness goals, especially when working with couples who are balancing busy schedules and wedding planning?

SG: Mindset and willingness are essential for achieving any goal, including a healthy weight, wellness, and a high quality of life. Life can be hectic and overwhelming, especially for young professionals balancing careers, wedding planning, and building a future together. Yet, what could be more meaningful than creating a life on a foundation of healthy habits, weight, and lifestyle? Supporting each other on this journey makes it easier to become the best version of yourself.

For engaged couples, it’s far easier to establish healthy habits together from the start rather than to try to change ingrained patterns later. Physical and mental well-being go hand-in-hand, and feelings of happiness and peace are often rooted in physical health. It’s difficult to experience true happiness while struggling with health issues, so prioritize wellness together—be healthy and be happy.

Helping couples reach these goals is a passion of mine. To make this journey seamless, I offer virtual consultations Monday through Saturday to fit even the busiest schedules. In addition to regular appointments every 2-3 weeks, I am always available to my clients by text for questions, advice, or encouragement. Together, let’s make wellness and happiness a reality.

WiH: What role does education and support play in long-term weight loss and health?

SG: In addition to decades of experience in internal medicine, cardiology, and weight management, I am also a certified nutritional genomics specialist, certified corporate wellness specialist, and health coach. My work with couples emphasizes the importance of nutrition and effective behavioral strategies in day-to-day choices. Together, we address challenges like dining out without sacrificing health goals, avoiding overeating during holidays and vacations, and staying on track during business travel. I once helped a client practice a detailed script to confidently say “no” when offered food by family, empowering her to maintain her goals with ease.

Beyond personalized guidance during appointments, I recently launched an interactive online course, Slim for Life: Mastering Weight Loss and Nutrition. This course delves into nutrition essentials, the genetic influences on weight and metabolism, label reading, meal planning, and more. While medications can help manage appetite and portion control, establishing sustainable healthy habits is the key to long-term weight maintenance.
