Niku, a News and Traffic Anchor for the San Antonio news station KENS-5 and Geno, who is in the Air Force Special Ops, were total strangers until meeting at a coffee shop in the Alamo City. After exchanging glances, Geno invited Niku to sit with him. Three and a half hours later, they suddenly “noticed the time and were both shocked at how two strangers had such a strong connection,” says Niku.
After two and a half years of long-distance, Geno proposed to Niku at a winery in Fredericksburg.
After rescheduling their wedding three times due to COVID-19, Geno learned he would be stationed in Japan, and with the borders being closed, Niku would not be able to visit him. “That, on top of the canceled weddings, literally broke my heart,” says Niku. “I was so let down by all the bad news that it was hard for me to get wedding inspiration and get back into the planning mood again. New venue, new vendors, everything!”
However, the third time was a charm! On Geno’s short three-week break to the US, the couple wed on Memorial day, after Niku found the venue and vendors at short notice.
On May 31, 2021, the couple had an extravagant Persian wedding in honor of Niku’s culture with an abundance of pink, lilac and cream flowers. “It was such a different experience for many people in the crowd who are not Persian to witness, and it meant a lot to me that Geno participated in my culture’s customs. It’s a moment we both cherished,” says Niku.
