By the time they were ready to exchange vows, Kelly Shoup Anderson and Jared Anderson already shared a decade of memories.
The couple met in a high school Spanish class after Jared got in trouble for talking. The teacher made him move to the front of the class, where he took a seat near the girl who would turn out to be his future wife.
Kelly and Jared went on to develop a strong relationship,” says Kelly, a licensed specialist in school psychology.
Jared, a medical student at Texas Tech University, presented Kelly with an engagement ring in February, 2006, and she quickly jumped into the planning process. She and Jared live in Lubbock, but Kelly knew she wanted to get married at her father’s Brenham wedding venue, The Antique Rose Emporium. “Needless to say, my parents handled many of the wedding preparations. Everything fell into place quickly,” she notes. The family worked with Margie Young at Events by Room Service to make the arrangements.
Kelly believes the years she and Jared spent building their relationship made the planning much less stressful. “I was just eager to begin my life with Jared,” she says.
The result was a formal, yet intimate, ceremony held June 24, 2006.
Before the 275 guests arrived, photographer Scott Hill of Brenham Portrait Gallery had Jared pose by the gazebo where he would be waiting for Kelly during the ceremony. Hill shot photos as Kelly walked up to him in her gown. “It was our intimate moment,” Kelly says. “And when I walked down the second time I was relaxed.”
Later that day guests sipped water and lemonade in the garden area until a bell rang, signaling them to proceed to the wedding area.
During the ceremony, two of Kelly’s great-uncles were officiants, and cousins read passages from two of Kelly’s favorite children’s books, The Little Prince and The Velveteen Rabbit. Kelly’s youngest brother, who has Down’s Syndrome and is autistic, served as the ring bearer.
Kelly still remembers the sights, sounds and scents of the day. There were roses everywhere, and guests would later toss rose petals at the couple while they danced, and again as they departed from the wedding. Her father, Mike Shoup, had planted yellow, purple and red flowers near the ceremony site to complement the colors in Kelly’s bouquet from Brenham Floral.
Food was an important element of the reception. Menu selections included grilled salmon, patés, cheeses, breads, antipasto and tuna tartare. Kelly requested a tres leches cake from baker and caterer Design II, and the groom asked for tiramisu. Everything was accented with roses.
Kelly says she couldn’t be more satisfied with her wedding day. She only has one regret: “I should have videotaped it,” she admits. “Now I wish I could relive the party. Other than that, everything was perfect.”
